Hosai Matsubayashi XVI
The sixteenth-generation head of Asahiyaki, Hosai Matsubayashi XVI continues a lineage that spans more than four centuries in Uji, upholding the traditional techniques and philosophy of his family kiln while bringing a contemporary sensibility to his work. His creations are exhibited not only in Japan but also across the world, reflecting his ongoing exploration of how the spirit of chanoyu—the Japanese Way of Tea—can be received and reimagined in the present day.
Matsubayashi’s artistic expression unfolds along two distinct yet harmonious paths. One lies in the gentle, warm tones of Kase—a traditional glaze reminiscent of the speckled back of a deer—whose subtle surface seems to hold within it the vastness of the cosmos. The other finds form in Geppaku, a serene celadon glaze with the clarity of an open sky, embodying a uniquely modern vision of beauty. Through these works, he invites viewers into a dialogue between earth and light, heritage and innovation.
