NAKAGAWA Shuji
Shuji Nakagawa is a renowned Japanese woodworking artist, born in Kyoto in 1968. He studied contemporary art in the Department of Sculpture at Kyoto Seika University before apprenticing under his father, Seiji Nakagawa—designated a Living National Treasure in 2001—thus embarking on a professional path rooted in traditional woodworking.
Working consistently with Japanese wood, Nakagawa creates refined pieces that seamlessly blend traditional Japanese woodworking techniques with a contemporary design sensibility. His body of work spans furniture, tableware, and interior objects, each reflecting a profound love for and deep understanding of wood as a material. His practice seeks to reveal the inherent beauty, structure, and warmth of wood, combining time-honored methods with innovative approaches.
Since the 1990s, Nakagawa has received numerous accolades, including major awards at the Kyoto Arts and Crafts Exhibition. In 2003, he established his own studio, Nakagawa Woodcraft Hira Workshop, in the Hira mountain region of Shiga Prefecture. As a member of the traditional crafts collective GO ON since 2012, he continues to explore new possibilities for contemporary craft.
His iconic work, the KI-OKE Stool, entered the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2016 and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 2017, marking a significant milestone in his international recognition. Nakagawa has since exhibited widely at major museums and galleries worldwide and was selected as a finalist for the Loewe Craft Prize.
Shuji Nakagawa’s works embody a quiet yet powerful exploration of the potential of wood as a material. Through his creations, we rediscover the warmth and natural beauty of wood, experiencing a harmonious dialogue between Japanese tradition and contemporary aesthetics. With unwavering dedication and refined craftsmanship, Nakagawa continues to offer beauty, inspiration, and a renewed connection between material, form, and daily life.
